Position SummaryThe National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and
the Green Bank Observatory (GBO) are diverse and prestigious

seeking a qualified Network Administrator to provide networking
infrastructure support for Telescope and Observatory operations.
The Network Administrator will report to the Network Operations
Manager. The successful candidate will help administer,
troubleshoot, and upgrade the GBO and NRAO LANs, as well as
communicate and troubleshoot the internet connection to Internet-2
through local ISPs and the University of West Virginia. The
position is based in Green Bank, West Virginia and the successful
candidate must be eligible for employment in the United States. The
position will be based in Green Bank, WV. After a training and
orientation period, a partial telework arrangement may be
considered in accordance with the NRAO telework policies. The GBO
Jansky Lab is located in Green Bank, WV: a small and rural town
well known for its outdoor recreation opportunities. Local favorite
activities include (but are not limited to) mountain biking,
hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and other recreational activities,
indoor and outdoor. Green Bank is located within the Monongahela
National Forest, which is comprised of 2,656 square miles of
federally protected land within the Appalachian Mountains. Green
Bank is also well known for the National Radio Quiet Zone, which
provides radio frequency protection for the extremely sensitive
Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and other telescopes on
the GBO site. What You Will be DoingTo manage the network at the
GBO and NRAO, the Network Administrator duties will include (but
are not limited to):
- Developing and maintaining relationships with internet service
providers in order to troubleshoot outages, as well as open and
escalate outage tickets;
- Implementing processes to maximize network performance by
monitoring, troubleshooting network problems, and managing the
timely resolution of outages;
- Monitoring, measuring and improving performance and resiliency
of the GBO intranet, including high-speed data links within the
data center;
- Procuring and configuring network hardware for infrastructure
upgrades;
- Writing technical support documentation for network systems and
applications;
- Installing and connecting network and server hardware within
the GBO data centers;
- Planning and coordinating network maintenance activities around
telescope observing schedules;
- Provide remote support for other NRAO sites, including
Charlottesville, Virginia and Socorro, New Mexico;
- Participating in cross-training the network support personnel
at all of the NRAO sites to foster collaboration, enhance skill
sets and promote knowledge sharing. Work EnvironmentWhile
performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently sits at
a desk, uses a personal computer, telephone, and other standard
office equipment; the ability to climb stairs is required. The
employee is required to bend, reach, and must have finger
dexterity. The employee is required to lift and/or move up to 25
pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include
close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. May
occasionally work at high altitudes. Must be able to communicate
effectively both verbally and in writing. Who Are You:
- You have an Associate's degree in computer science,
engineering, or related field, or an equivalent amount of education
and experience.
- You have at least two or more years of relevant experience with
networks and systems comparable to those of the Observatory or an
equivalent amount of education and experience.
- You have good working knowledge of Cisco IOS, Arista EOS, and
Nvidia Mellanox MLNX-OS.
- You have comprehensive knowledge of networking concepts and
computing infrastructures. Competency Summary
